Aadhaar App With Facial Recognition Based on Authentication Revealed by UIDAI

Here is everything you need to know about the UIDAI'S redesigned Aadhaar App for smartphones.

The redesigned Aadhaar App is currently testing by a small group of users

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has officially unveiled a redesigned Aadhaar APP for smartphones that are used to scan a user's face to conform their identity. According to the UIDAI Unique Identification Authority of India the new app is designed to enable digital verification via a QR based code and the camera on a user's smartphones, without the need to submit photocopies of a user's Aadhaar Card. The App could eventually speed up the process of identification and verification, but concerns are rising around the use of biometrics for the Authentication continues to linger.

UIDAI Conducts a Testing of the Revamped Aadhaar Application

The new application was showcased at Aadhaar Samvaad, the stakeholders meeting with ecosystem partners, that was held in the Delhi on this Thursday. At the event, The UIDAI demonstrated the revamped Aadhaar Application, which was integrated its Aadhaar Face Authentication system that a user can scan their face's to conform their identity.

According to the UIDAI, the new Aadhaar app allows users with an Aadhaar card to authenticate themselves without carrying a physical version of the card. or sharing photocopies of the document with a service provider. Once the Application is set up on a user's smartphones, it can be used to securely verify their identity and no details are shared with the provider.

A video is showing the capabilities of the new Aadhaar Application sheds some light on the authentication process. When presented with a QR code or an Application that requests identity verification, the Aadhaar Application will prompt the users to enter their security PIN to unlock their APPLICATION and begin authenticated.

Users will then be presented with a masked, digital version of their Aadhaar card in the Application. They can scan a QR code, which shows the information (for e.g: name, date of birth, and masked mobile number of the user) requested by the service provider. Which can be a hotel reception desk or a shop.

If a user chooses to go ahead with authentication process, the application will be prompt them to position their faces in circle in the middle of the screen shown on the application. This application requires a user to blink their eyes in order to complete the authentication process, and a conformation message will be displayed to the user that their identity has been verified successfully.

While the redesigned Aadhaar application might streamline the authentication process and cut down on the use of physical documents, experts are saying that this have warned about the security of their users biometric information on centralized services. Facial biometrics, fingerprints, and iris scans are immutable and cannot be changed unlike passwords and security codes and leak could put enrolled users at risk of their identity theft and others forms of misuse.
